It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see. - Henry David Thoreau
ABOUT MEMelinda Lane - artist and gardenerMelinda Lane is a Massachusetts based artist whose work is filtered through a lifelong interest in art, architecture and the decorative arts. Since childhood, she has logged countless hours visiting museums, historic homes, and gardens throughout the United States and in Europe. After studying art and literature in college, she worked in the fashion industry and as a scenic artist on sets for Broadway, film, and television. During this time she also earned an MFA from Vermont College.
Upon returning to Massachusetts, renovating an old home and gardening became her major efforts for several years. The house and garden have become a starting point for paintings and pastels focused on still life and interiors. As a representational artist, Lane focuses on the development of space in the picture plane and the interaction of man made objects with the natural world. |
PORTFOLIORecent WorkSummer is the time for gardening and flowers. This year has been so rainy that I have spent more time painting than gardening. Another silver lining is that we have had several very dry summers, so the rain is welcome for our stressed trees.

A Look at the Process
I tend to start with an idea. Here It is the idea of light filtering into the room through the layers leaves and the lace curtain. How will it affect colors and forms? How does the vase of hydrangea sit against this activity? What will become the focus in this picture? This sketch should help work out these questions and see if I should continue with this motif.
